This joint position paper from the Horizon Europe projects BCOMING, BEPREP, RESTOREID and ZOE argues that biodiversity should be recognised as a strategic component of One Health policy, pandemic preparedness and health security. Drawing evidence from four EU-funded research projects, the paper highlights how biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and land-use change can increase the risk of disease emergence and undermine ecosystem resilience.
The paper sets out concrete recommendations for the European Life Sciences Strategy and future EU framework programmes. These include investments in long-term biodiversity-health observatories, integrated surveillance systems, predictive modelling and restoration approaches that incorporate health considerations from the outset. Together, these measures can help build a more preventive, evidence-based and resilient European One Health framework.
